We practice a style of Karate called Shotokan Karate, a very traditional style of karate which take its name from the pen name of Master Gichin Funakoshi. The emphasis is on Karate-Do or 'way' and goes well beyond self-defence or fighting techniques. The training is very physical, an excellent workout, but sparring is non-contact. We have a lot training material including a book written by Master Funakoshi called Karate-Do Kyohan that illustrates the kata and techniques.

The dojo is a member a Canada Shotokan Karate (CSK), which is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (9 other clubs in Quebec, 3 in Ontario and many others on the west coast of Canada, in the US and throughout the world. SKA is a non-profit organization, all teachers are volunteers. The Shihan ( chef instructor ) is Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima a direct student of Master Funakoshi ( founder of Shotokan Karate ) and former captain of Waseda University in Toyko.

Shotokan Karate of America was founded in 1955 by Tsutomu Ohshima, one of Master Funakoshi's last direct pupils.

Montréal Shotokan Karate Dojo was founded in 2002 and is one of about 23 Canada Shotokan dojos.
